While all Canadian discount brokerages offer options trading capabilities, the pricing between brokerages varies substantially. В In addition, options commission pricing is also very complicated compared to equity (stock) trading commission pricing.

All the discount brokerages charge commissions for options trading on a вЂњper contractвЂќ basis, meaning they charge commissions based on how many options contracts are purchased. В В The fee that is charged per contract can be a fixed dollar amount, or the fee can vary depending on the price of the option itself. В Some discount brokerages also charge a fixed commission amount (what we refer to as a вЂњbase commission feeвЂќ) per options trade regardless of how many contracts are purchased, whereas other discount brokerages will not have a base commission fee, but instead have a minimum charge per trade. Be aware that while most discount brokerages have the same pricing for US or Canadian options commissions, certain brokerages have different per contract pricing depending on whether the option is Canadian or American.

In addition to commission fees for buying or selling options contracts, Canadian discount brokerages also charge fees for exercising or being assigned an options contract. In our pricing table, we are assuming the underlying instrument of the option contract is a stock. В Exercise/assignment pricing is a bit more complex than options commission pricing because the exercise/assignment usually involves the purchase/sale of an amount of stocks. tremendous summary, thanks for that. Canadian offerings are substantially more expensive than our American brothers. Do these platforms all offer Level2 pricing. direct routing and non-affressor volume rebates. When a platform attempts to attract “players” it is the aforementioned paramters that seal the deal. It seems to me that Canadian based platforms are very much geared to the intoductory/non-sophisticated trader ie:retail trader by definition, as opposed to experienced sophisticated traders. i stumbled upon your site as a Canadian based trader who do to regulatory parameters cannot register with American discount options brokers to trade US Equity Options. Additionally, with such an acute customer demographic base, it is simply hilarious that these firms attempt to be rigid in their pricing models regarding commissions and fees. An elementary equation of supply of potential customers (minimal) and available broking platforms (plenty) make the decision to select a broker that is very simply for the client to offer the prospective broker what they are prepared to pay NOT for the broker to state this is what the fees and commissions are. At best these brokers can attempt to close their platform sale with a client at their offered rates, but ANY sophisticated trader will simply counter offer what they are willing to pay and the broker that meets those rates, secures the clients business. this is 2013, NOT 1973.

Brokers compete fiercely for online business. Besides products and service, they will try to differentiate themselves within the industry by offering the lowest commissions. It would seem that a straightforward comparison of broker commissions would easily show what brokers are truly leading the low-commission war; however, that is not the case.

This article will discuss the reasons why comparison is difficult and what commission rates you should be paying the most attention to.

Don’t Trust Broker Commission Comparison Tables

Most online broker Web sites have a commission comparison table somewhere within their marketing information. Invariably, the major brokers will show themselves as the low-cost leader compared with their competitors.

Disclosing commissions accurately is a regulatory requirement, so how can all brokers show themselves as the cost leader and still be telling the truth?

Brokers charge different commission rates for each kind of trade. Buying 100 shares of stock costs a different amount than buying 1,000 shares, or a mutual fund, or a bond or an option … you get the idea.

There is an extremely large number of possible trade combinations that will all cost a different amount in commissions. Most brokers can find some combination of trades in which they are the low-cost leader. This combination of trades may look good, but probably does not reflect the way you trade. For example, the lowest cost for trading 100 shares of stock we found in a survey of the major online brokers was $7 per trade, and the highest commission for the same trade was $15. However, if you needed to talk to a broker to execute your trade, the low-cost leader would charge you $27, while the higher commission broker would talk to you for free.

The commissions for mutual funds and options were also more expensive with the “low-cost” líder. This additional information could easily tip the balance depending on what kind of investor you are.

The bottom line for these comparison tables is that they are highly footnoted, biased and don’t reflect your needs as an individual. The best course of action is to completely ignore them the same way you would toss a piece of junk mail.

How to Pick the Broker With the Lowest Commissions

On the bright side, we feel that there is a logical way to evaluate a broker’s commission schedule in a meaningful way, but it requires a little effort on your part.

1. Evaluate and record your typical trading needs and size.

Create a list of the types of trades you execute (or would like to execute), the typical size of those trades, and your trading frequency. Call the brokers you are evaluating and ask each of them to quote to you how much they will charge in commissions based on your list of typical trades. They want your business, so make them work for it.

Evaluate broker commissions based on your own behavior rather than on a piece of advertising.

2. Ask for lower rates or other concessions.

Keep in mind that most brokers are showing you their advertised rates. They may be willing to discount their rates for you, and will frequently match the rates you want from another broker to get your business.

The point is that you won’t get what you don’t ask for, and this may allow you to match the commissions you want with the broker that has the tools, products and service you prefer.

3. What are the other fees?

Brokers publish commissions and fees in long disclosures. These are boring and are too general to be very useful. Now that you have a quote for the commissions that relate to you specifically, you are more prepared to find out what other fees will be charged against your account.

Some of the fees you should look out for include inactivity fees, monthly or quarterly minimums, transfer fees, margin costs and the fees associated with calling a broker on the phone.

As an individual investors, you can’t control the market or your returns. This makes it absolutely critical to maximize your control where you can. Trading costs are a key area to evaluate when choosing a broker. and once you know what to look for it really isn’t all that difficult.

The are a solid overall broker, good reviews and trusted by their loyal users. The website is out of date though, and the customer support is not available as Tradorax. They also offer fewer educational resources. If educational resources are not important to you you probably will not mind 24Options.

We recommend 24Options because they have excellent reviews from their customers and they offer some good bonuses and promotions as well.

EzTrader

EZtrader is a name that everyone in binary options knows. They were the first company to offer a web based trading platform, they have an app for smartphones, and they have the most professional looking website. They also have by far the most educational resources for traders. They are a legitimate choice for an amateur or more experienced trader alike because of their professional yet easy to use platform. They also have 24/7 customer service, and offices located in multiple countries. If you feel most comfortable trading with the titan of the industry, this is the choice for you.

The downside is that they don’t offer a lot of incentives to open an account because they are so well known, and there are some complaints out there about them. Complaints have mostly focused on later adjustments to accounts to turn winning trades into losing trades, and having a very long and difficult withdrawal process. Any large company is going to receive some complaints, and some of these readjustments may be legitimate, for instance data feeds could have been interrupted or inaccurate at a trades execution, and later corrected to true prices.

This is a judgement call for traders. EzTrader is one of the largest companies in the world, so many clients must be very satisfied.

We recommend them because of their trading software, which is professional and convenient, and it allows trading from smartphone and tablet devices.

Of course, all this information is available on broker websites, but as I’ve found out – it can be very difficult and time consuming to compile even basic information from a broker website.

Things to look for in a discount brokerage

Trading commissions – Don’t pay $29 for a trade when you could be paying a lot less. That’s just not a good deal.

Account fees – there are a lot of conditions for account fees, so study these carefully. Most of the time, investors with large balances can get the fees waived, but smaller investors should look for an account with no fees.

Learn to negotiate

I can’t emphasize enough that if you have a decent amount of assets, then try to negotiate fees. As to how much you need in assets to negotiate – try it and find out for yourself. Here are some suggested negotiation areas:

Trading commissions – Are you at a big bank and are not too far away from having enough money to qualify for $10 commission? Ask for them now. TD and Qtrade just joined Scotia by lowering their cheap trade threshold to $50,000. Ask your bank to do the same for you.

Currency exchange fees – Before doing a trade between currencies, it is worthwhile to call and see what kind of preferred rate might be available.

Transfer to new brokerage fees – If you are moving to a new brokerage, ask them to pay your transfer fees.

Account fees – If you are close to the threshold for no account fees, ask if they can be waived.

Interactive Brokers has the lowest commissions and exchange rate of all the brokers listed. The main drawbacks of IB are that they only have non-registered accounts available and there is a $10,000 account minimum.

Investors who trade frequently get the best deals on commissions. Interactive Brokers has the best deal for non-registered accounts with a minimum of $10,000 ($3,000 minimum if you are 21 or younger). The big banks have good deals for active traders at $6 to $7 per trade, which is only slightly more than Questrade .

@My Uni $ – I can’t say I’ve ever had issues, although I know when they did a conversion to their new webpage a year ago – the phone call wait times were quite long. I think around several minutes.

Since then, it’s gotten a lot better.

It’s hard to evaluate things you read online – as I wrote about here

it’s typically the people who have the problems or love the product that post online. Another thing about Questrade is that because of it’s low fees and low entry barriers (ie you can start an account with $1,000 with no fees), it tends to attract beginners who are investing for the first time.

Beginners are likely to have more problems, especially when it comes to transferring between brokers.

Curious, do any of the online trading companies listed in your article include access to purchasing the stocks found on the Austrulian Stock Exchange?

Options Express now have cheaper rates and the number of trades per quarter is now 9!

Hey Mike great post. I am very excited and scared to start self directed investing. I am at the point where I have an a small amount of money I am willing to risk and looking for a discount brokerage to start off with. I am however a rookie and do know about the companies I want to buy stock with but know nothing about the actual purchase of said stock ie which markets I can buy from etc. Is there a good brokerage for dummies like me?

@Jayisnew – Questrade is best for small investors because of the fees. In your case, you need to spend some time learning first. The brokerage won’t help you with that.

You might want to consider investing with TD e-funds until you have more money.

I am looking to trade on less mainstream exchanges for international trading. A brokerage like RBC Direct Invest is very limited. What is my best option?

Scotia iTrade increasing fees effective April 2012.

Now QTrade is best by far. I use to have TDW for the e-funds, but commission free ETF trading beats e-funds (no 90 day penalty). I then had Scotia for the bond a buck (and commission free ETF). But now they increase the minimum commission for bond trades to $24.99. So, now QTrade gets my business (19.00 minimum bond trade, and commission free ETF).

Safety of funds is all the same if you are not a millionaire since it is all insured.

I learned the hard way that you have to read the rules very carefully and some of the selection boxes are very confusing. I had trouble with Scotia i-trade since it was e-trade but it is getting worse. I had most of my money with Scotia McLeod, the fees were high but I had confidence in them. Ca n you tell me which statement this is – I am curious as I have never assumed they would do this unless you lacked funds to settle a trade or pay a fee.

My problem is what to do with “loose change” i. e. cash sitting idle in an account. TD offers access to several “high interest” accounts with a low minimum ($1,000?) whereas BMO requires a minimum of $25,000. Similarly, GIC minimums at BMO are $5,000, where they are (I believe) only $1,000 at TD. At Scotia one can put money into a government bond based ETF with no fee, but of course the value of the ETF is not guaranteed. As pointed out, researching all this information for the various brokerages is tedious.

Just wondering if you have looked into whether any of Discount Brokerages offer RDSPs? I know TD Waterhouse does, but I think they are alone in that. Es eso correcto? Anyway great job laying out the comparison, very helpful

I have an account with OptionExpress and like it very much, however, they do not trade Canadian $, so I keep my account with TD, they trading platform is so hard to use terrible quality on: quoting, charting, account display, etc… I am so frustrated and wish so much to leave TD. However, who’s trading software is the best? I tried Quest Trade and did not like it.

Does anybody have a comparison of platform fees? I used to be with Trade Freedom there platform included intraday charting for free but Scotiai Trade is now charging 70-100$!

Scotia ITrade are introducing minimum account balances and annual fees for registered accounts. The deadline for existing clients was tomorrow but has been extended to Sept 21. The comparison table needs updating. Here is the information I was sent:

I used to be with iTrade then platform fee was $31.45 now it is $70 or $100 depending how often you trade, I finally switched to VB. I did a lot of research and find them to be the best priced online trading firm in Canada. iTrade is your typical Canadian bank which nickel and dimes you to death.

Bill: I confirm your comments on Scotia itrade fees. I’ve decided to take all my funds regular broker and put it into tirade. I’ve negotiated to get the $100 fee back because I’m sticking 250K into it, getting 100 days free trading (although I’m not a new client), and they’re covering the fees for the transfers, and I’ll get their top trading platform for free. I guess you need that level of account to get the perks, but whatever you do “NEGOTIATE”.

Has anyone used Credential Direct? Their write-up looks good, but I’m wondering if they allow contingency trading. Anyone know? Guess I’ll give them a call early next week if I don’t hear back here. primero.

2) I don’t know what a small vs. large amount of money is for a discount brokerage. I am looking to setup an account with

$120K – is that large? Does that change whether or not I should look at a small brokerage (IB/Questrade) vs. a bank? As one poster pointed out, all the money is insured up to $1M so I don’t see why it would matter. We (my family) have about double that with one large institutional brokerage and we are getting…er…HOSED on the fees so I’ve decided to a) go direct b) follow a passive/couch potato/sleep Canadian investment strategy. Small generally means less than $50k in assets. Less than that amount means very high commissions at the bank brokerages.

OX Canada shut down effective early December. All accounts were switched to Virtual Brokers.

OX was the best broker I have ever used in Canada, and I’ve used IB, Etrade, Fidelity, TD, and others. So far, VB has been an absolutely horrible experience. Most of the staff is incompetent. They don’t return emails. Phone wait times are huge. The trading platforms are messy, and some give you incorrect or incomplete information. The statements are bad. Trade rejections are commonplace, and they never tell you why.

I’d go to IB in a heartbeat if they offered RRSPs. I’m hoping TD will offer the ThinkorSwim platform with US$ RRSPs soon. Fingers crossed.

I wanted to comment on RBC; I’m not sure if you make a distinction between RBC Direct and their Direct Investing arm. However your statement that if you have over “50,000 or greater in household assets you pay $9.95”. I was trying to get that rate assigned to my account as I have over $80,000 in RRSPS, the balance of my mortgage and HELOC with them (lots of equity I’ve already paid them!) and they told me that it’s 50,000 with Direct Investing NOT RBC.

I’m NOT going to pay $30 +- per trade.

Just thought I’d share my crappy experience with Virtual Brokers.

I’ve been trying to open a new account for a few weeks now, but they don’t respond to e-mails, and when I call they put me on hold forever. The only reason I’m even calling is because they left me a message saying “we had a problem opening your account; we’ll call you back, but just in case we don’t, please call us at…”. Not exactly confidence-inspiring! So I’m going to try Questtrade…

I was happily trading with Options Xpress but they transferred all their Canadian accounts to Virtual Brokers. What a nightmare. Their site is confusing and totally bewildering with 3 different plattforms. Takes forever to connect with someone on phone. Trade details don’t post until next day. I trade options strictly as stock substitutes exclusively employing puts and calls. I’m strictly a stock-picker. going long and short. Anyone have a suggestion for a better alternative?

Been with Virtual Brokers since the takeover of OptionsXpress. Stay Away. I am mostly an income investor. Dividends arrive several weeks late, if at all. Requests to transfer funds to bank are ignored. I tried to transfer one account to another broker and it still hasn’t even been initiated after 7 weeks. It appears that once they have your money, they will never let you have it back! Also, be careful with DRIP plans, Virtual Brokers, Questrade, and some others have their own in-house plan. You will not be eligible to receive discounted re-investments or enhanced dividends offered by many companies.

Kevin is spot on about Virtual Brokers. They seem to have suffered some kind of meltdown since absorbing Options Express customers, winning the Globe & Mail 2012 online broker ratings and taking over their own clearing.

Don’t bother trying to open an account with them for the foreseeable future. Your application will fall into a Black Hole. They don’t answer emails or telephone calls.

I can’t comment on their platforms and trading performance, since they’ve denied me the experience.

Does anyone knows which brokerage firms provide capital gains report for transactions? I am currently with Questrade but only get a summary of transactions. This means I have to calculate capital gains/losses every tax season. I have heard some of the big banks offer complete capital gains reporting, is it only for high net worth clients?

I was previously with questrade but left after seven different technical errors on their system cancelled my trades. Questrade is actually rated the lowest in the country in terms of customer satisfaction but people are attracted by their low prices

One of the items mentioned was the ability to have some brokerages reduce or eliminate their additional currency exchange in house fees when you buy U. S. Stocks with Canadian dollars. The process. to have them apply, was referred to as WASHING, in the article . You call the brokerage firm the same time you are making the trade ( yourself online ) and ask them to offset your Can $ to U. S. Dollar with another U. S. Dollar to Can $ trade. Seems this way you’ll only get charged the exchange rate. Can you clarify this process ? Gracias

Which one would you recommend with low fees, etc. I only have $1k to play with for now. I read the comments about VB, which maybe outdated. I wonder which one of these selftrading brokage plaform offers a good trailing stop by % instead of a fix price? Trailing stop by pourcentage is the best tool by far in the kind of market we have right now. I’m with RBC direct and its not good. They only have stop loss at a fix price and you have to renew it every 30-40 days. They told me that its the Canadian law that made the stop loss temporary. Can’t keep it for a long time. So if the market crash and you haven’t reconfirm the stop lost on every single stock you own, say Bye! Bye! to your savings .

It seems most reviews of Online Brokerages focus on cots items, fees per trade, account admin fees, etc. I’m more interested in “value adders” such as reports, particularly consolidated performance reports versus portfolio statements; and research and guidance information such as recommendations for asset mix; geographic, FI vs Equity; Mutual Funds vs ETFs, etc. Anyone found a good source of research and comparatives on factors such as these?

Not sure how old this article is but I would like to respond to Stephen above regarding “wash trade”. TDW had a messy way of doing it for registered accounts. If you buy a US$ stock/option first time, of course you will be hit with conversion fees. But if you call them ONCE, they would set up the wash trade so on sale of US$ stock/option, a US$ money market fund will be purchased automatically. If you do another US$ trade, this US$ money market fund will be automatically sold to cover the purchase. You can also buy the US$ money market fund first and then start trading in US$. As of December, 2014, TD has split the C$ & US$ portions of registered accounts (about time!!), so the above method is no longer applicable but some other brokerages may be using it. Of the other brokerages, RBC has separate C$ & US$ registered accounts for at least 2 years (if not longer). Things happen very slowly at big banks in Canada. For example, TD website and features are from 90s. Their phone/tablet apps are clunky. They need to wake up and take the step to get into 21st century!

Hola a todos. I am international student in Canada and would like to know is there any Canadian Discount Brokerage that doesn’t require citizenship in order to open an account. I did some research and it is going to be hard to find one so my next question is since I have an account with CIBC bank and I have already invested in some mutual funds through them how good or bad idea would be for me to stay with only mutual funds since I do not dispose with huge amount of money. Also there is solution for me to go with CIBC Investors Discount Brokerage but regarding to the post above they have higher fees and I am not sure should I even open account with them. I am planning to invest around $4000. I am beginner who would like to start trading with ETF since I have read some articles about it and I would appreciate any help. Gracias.

Hello I think we should start talking about Suretrader as well. They probably have the best borrows to short along with IB for active trader that trades smallcaps on NASDAQ and AMEX. Unlike other broker that clear their own stuff, they clear through ETC.

Stay as far away from VB as possible. These guys are the worst! I wanted to buy a specific MF and I contacted them about it before signing up. They said it was available. After I signed up, their trade desk tells me “Sorry, it’s actually not available”. Then I try to close my accounts and they don’t let me take back all my money. They keep a “minimum balance” in there. When I call and complain, they say they’ll “resolve it”. A month later, I still don’t get the remainder back and when I check my VB account, I see the money’s been charged as “Inactivity Fee”. I try calling them and can’t even get through to their horrible customer service. Worst experience … ever!

Although the maximum profits are technically unlimited with FOREX, the negative is that the maximum loss on a FOREX trade could be all the money in your trading account (which is why FOREX traders should always set stop losses immediately after entering trades).

AUDUSD – This pair has the widest range of payouts that I’ve seen. You can get 90% at GTOptions at certain times. It can also be traded Sunday night at midnight through the end of the week.

Commodities Gold – This commodity is traded on the OTC Forex market. You can find this active from Midnight on Sunday through the end of the week. Gold can be slippery to trade, so make sure you have a solid strategy to trade this Binary Option.

Silver – Very similar to Gold, Silver can be traded at the same times. Not a wide range mover, so find good setups for sure.

Trading Apple in the morning is your best option, but brokers do wait for the heavy volume to finish.

Google – You may see the symbol GOOG. This asset has huge swings and like Apple, it can be traded between 10:30 AM until the end of the day using 15 and 30 minute intervals. Having good setups on this stock can be very profitable due to it’s wide moves.

Exxon – You can trade XOM based on how oil is reacting for the day. There are a lot of strategies to consider when trading a company like this or BP. You can find this stock traded at the same time as AAPL and GOOG.

Barclays – This is one of the strongest stocks traded during the EURO session. US traders can catch some of this trading action if they are up early. The thing about stocks is that you need a good data feed on your charts. Freestockcharts may be suitable, but you may want to get a 30 day trial if you are seeking the best feed.

Facebook – FB is one of the newest stocks to come on board and should be traded with caution. Not a huge mover and could carry a lot of head fakes.

France Telecom – Another euro session stock that maybe worth looking into if you can trade at these particular hours.

Indicies DOW Jones – Traded the same hours as the US stocks since it’s opened at the same time. It consists of some of the big stocks talked about already, so it can be uses as an indicator of what price action will do. Will help you find the trend for the day.

S&P 500 – Just like the DOW, the S&P will trade the same times and be an overall indicator of the market since it is made up of all these stocks. Use the S&P as a daily and inrtraday indicator.

FTSE 100 – Traded during Euro hours, it is a good indicator of where the Euro stocks are headed. These are traded at three in the morning New York time until 11:30am New York Time. Not ideal for US traders, but available for those late night people.

All the times can get confusing, so make sure you learn which times are the best times to trade. Trading the best market conditions is critical to your success. Unless you find a loophole during slow moving times, you are better off sticking to the time the asset is really in play. Over time you will determine this information.

The EURUSD is always in play, but there are usually two times where it is best to trade. This include the first few hours of the Euro opening and the first few hours of the US session. What are Options?

Options is a type of trading that allows the investor to buy a contract that gives him the right to buy or sell an asset such a commodity or forex option.

Traditional Options, sometimes referred to as Vanilla Options. have both marked similarities and differences when compared to Binary Options, which are sometimes also known as digital options, fixed return options (FROs) or all or nothing options.

What similarities do they have?

Let’s compare traditional options and the newer binary options. Both Traditional Options and Binaries are different types of derivatives – their price derived from an assets value. They are essentially both contracts that give the trader the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset – that can be stocks, currencies, indices, bonds and commodities – at a specific price on or before a certain date.

The asset is used both in Traditional Options and Binary trading exists solely as a proxy, as a benchmark for the option itself to determine whether the contract has expired in-the-money or out-of-the-money.

What are the Differences between them?

As with most investments the most important aspect to compare between binaries and traditional options is the payout.

With binary trading the payout is predetermined at the onset of the contract and can be anywhere between 50 – 90% if the contract expires ‘in-the-money’. In the case of a vanilla option, the payout is variable and the payout is dependent on the size of the assets movement once passed the strike price.

In traditional options, an investor pays per contract (i. e. pips). This means that the investor will profit or lose an amount depending on the number of pips difference between the expiry level and the strike price. This is unlike FROs where the two outcomes, giving its Bi-nary nature, are fixed from the start.

There is a notable difference in the expiry time between Traditional Options and Binary Options, although less so since online Binary trading exploded in 2008. Traditional options generally offer monthly or quarterly expiry times, whereas FROs have expiry times at hourly, daily, weekly and monthly points, allowing you to make a trade with just 5 – 15 minutes before the expiry time.

The short term multiple expiry times enable investors to make an instant profit on their trades and hence providing much more flexibility with thier investments as compared to vanilla options.

The sale of a vanilla option can be executed at any point up to the expiry time. This is unlike the execution of a fixed return option which can only be exercised at the time of expiry. Here, an investor must hold onto his option until the expiry date. He must therefore take more care when purchasing his options as he cannot sell them once they are purchased, unlike in traditional options where the investor can sell an option at any point before the expiry time, creating more flexibility.

This is where the difference between these two types of options really gets highlighted. With the all-or-nothing options, an investor can never lose more than what he invested and can sometimes even get a refund of up to 15% of his investment amount, even if a prediction finishes out of the money. The reward for such limited risk if the prediction finishes in the money, is less than that a traditional option can potentially offer, which can be from 0 – infinity. However, traditional options can be leveraged which although magnifies the rewards, greatly increases the risk.

It is the risk vs. reward factor that sees many new traders, with limited or no experience of trading the financial markets. Binary or Digital Options offer just simple yes/no investment decisions that can be made multiple times within a day and do not require the constant monitoring of markets over a number of days and weeks to decide whether or not they want to exercise their option to either buy or sell the asset. The rewards can be potentially much higher in traditional options but they can take considerably longer with the increased risk of the profit or loss being dependant on the swing in the movement, which coupled with leveraged trades, can mean losing much more than you invested.
